Don Myers has been a friend of mine for forty years. While it is sad to hear of his passing Don's life was well lived with many interests and acts of kindness. I worked for Don for a while and found him to be gracious and every bit a gentleman. One particularly rainy day as I was leaving his home Don appeared with an umbrella to escort me to my car safe and dry as he became increasingly soggy. He rarely asked for help from others but always offered a hand where he could. He was bright, making his mother proud of his school accomplishments. As an active member on the schools sports teams Don wanted to discontinue his conflicting violin lessons. Don's mother had driven him through sleet and snow to keep the lessons going as she saw his potential of becoming a professional violinist. Like most persistent teens Don finally won that stand off. Once he became eighteen his mom stopped baking him a birthday cake but Don was so disappointed the tradition was immediately reinstated.
In his retirement years he taught himself to speed read allowing him to devour more information on the many subjects which interested him. One day he told me his heating system had broken down and he couldn't find a part. The whole thing was a dinosaur with huge appendages. It was so old they probably didn't make that needed part any longer. Don studied on the situation then successfully manufactured a replacement part of his own creation.
This kind and generous man also had strength and integrity. He would drive from Dansville to Pittsburgh to 'pick up' air craft for his assigned flight. Now that is a long commute. There is a check sheet the pilot would have to go over and be responsible for. Many items on the list had to do with safety. Don rejected a plane he felt was in violation. The company pressed the issue and said he could go back home as they didn't have another plane for him to take. So he began to gather his belongings to leave. Realizing he was serious they found another plane for his scheduled flight.
Don Myers was a quiet but deep and loyal friend over the years. I will miss him especially our annual Christmas Eve visits and exchanges of gifts. He has had an amazing life and lived it with love and kindness toward others. May God welcome Don into His kingdom. Now he can fly without safety concerns.

A dear friend, Masonic Brother and skilled pilot - he was one of a kind. I have an autographed copy of his book about Mars and memories of attending the Geneseo air show with him and my father.
High Flight
by John Gillespie Magee
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air…
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew –
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
