[Mel enjoyed winter all right. His favorite color may have been snowy-white.] We worked at VAMC/BC, on ward #39-1. It was where we wanted to be, although it was not always fun. Mel treated us well--patients and personnel. He left our VA and moved far away to where he maintained some roots. Mel would be bundled up well and wearing boots--when he needed to be. (Sometimes in New York State, winter weather won't wait.) The following is a memory Mel left with me: During one work break, a winter walk he did take, and a snow angel he did make. This was circa 1997. Now Mel is an angel up in Heaven.

It’s hard to say “goodbye” to such a unique person. From the time we met Mel, nearly 59 years ago, we knew that he was one of a kind. How could I ever forget him walking up and down our sidewalk in our little town practicing his bag pipes. We were and are so delighted that he and Cindy found each other. They were truly soul mates.
He was kind, caring, passionate about life. His commitment to his family, his Hunter ancestry, the Masons and boy scouts are remarkable and commendable. He was a godfather to our daughter Andrea. And even after 30 years still remembered her. We all loved him as Santa. I think he played that role for nearly 20 years.
Life was not always easy and yet he persevered and continued to grow. He will always be in our hearts and minds and we feel deeply for Cindy, Crystal, Josh, Feonna and Gauge. Our deepest sympathies.

First, my sincerest condolences to Mel's life partner, best friend and wife, Cindy. May God give you faithful and everlasting comfort and strength forever in all times and in all circumstances. To Mel's family, friends and all who knew and loved him, I heartily wish all of those same blessings to them as well.
Mel and I have been friends since college days in Corning,New York in the early 1970's. He became my good and lasting friend for life and that will never change. Mel has left a lasting legacy of goodness and kindness to others in the world. What better tribute could a person hope to achieve in this world? It's not goodbye my friend, for as we leaned long ago...."The Road goes ever on.."
