Obituary of Walter Harrison Downey

He was born in Rexville, on May 26, 1915, a son of the late Frank and Emma Day Downey. On July 7, 1962, he was married to Mildred Gates Downey who survives. He was the service manager at Witt Chevrolet in Dansville for over twenty years; he had also worked as the service manager at Lent Dodge also of Dansville. He was a member of the South Dansville United Methodist Church where he served as a lay minister and had served on many boards and committees. He was a WW II Army Air Corps veteran and a member of the Daniel Goho Post # 87 of The American Legion. Walt and Mildred along with her brother and sister in-law Otto (Sarah) Gates detailed cars for many years. In his spare time he enjoyed building bird houses, woodworking, gardening and reading. Surviving in addition to his dear wife Mildred, are a son, Ronald Downey of Springwater, a sister Ethel Stebbins of Lake Wales Fl. Four grandchildren, Ronald (Rita) Downey, Ruth Downey, John (Juanita) Lieders and Lorrie Zone, five great-grandchildren Maria and Michael Downey, Cody and Scott Zone and Angelina Santoro. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Friends may call Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., Dansville. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:00 am in the South Dansville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Kailborne officiating. Interment will be Rogersville Forest Lawn Cemetery, South Dansville.
