Obituary of Robert C. Roberts
Robert C, “Bob,” Roberts died peacefully at the age of 85 at Morgan Estates Assisted Living in Geneseo NY on 1/3/19.
He was born in Dansville, NY on 2/27/33, a son of Harry and Katherine (Pfaff) Roberts. He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn (Acomb) and brothers, Dr. William, Harold, Richard (Dick), and George. He graduated from Dansville Central High School in 1952. He attended Alfred University for 6 months, then in 1953 was drafted in the United States Army. Following basic training at Indiantown Gap, PA, he was selected from 179 troops to serve in the Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. He became squad leader of the United States Army Ceremonial Platoon. He performed at the many funerals in Arlington National Cemetery, at the arrival and departure ceremonies of visiting dignitaries, at the parades in and about Washington, and in the security mission of the 3rd Infantry Regiment. He was honorably discharged in 1955 and transferred to the 98th Division of the U.S. Army Reserve in which he served for 38 years. He retired in 1993 as a Command Sergeant Major. He was proud of the service he gave to his country.
When he was discharged from active duty, he came home to Dansville and worked for the family nursery business, which he would eventually own and run with his brothers Dick and George.
He was an active participant in the Dansville community, serving as a volunteer firefighter and ambulance driver. He was a member of the Union Hose and American Legion for more than 50 years.
Surviving Bob are his children, Judy (Mike) Eaton, Jeffrey (Mary) Roberts, Stephen (Maria) Roberts, Katie (George) Papazoglou, and Peggy Collins. He is survived by his sisters in law Alice Acomb, Carolyn Sick, and Dianne Acomb, six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 1-5 pm on Sunday at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., Dansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Mary’s Church in Dansville. There will be a private interment for the immediate family at Greenlawn Cemetery, Dansville.
