Obituary of Albert William Hawk

Dansville- Albert William Hawk age 88, passed away late Monday night October 15, 2018, at Noyes Memorial Hospital following an illness.

He was born in Dansville on July 23, 1930, a son of the late Edward A. and Fanny (Andres) Hawk, He was also predeceased by a son, Stephen Hawk and a brother, Duane Hawk. On April 21, 1951 he was married to Janice May who survives.

Al graduated from the Dansville High School, Class of 1947.  He went on to graduate with a Bachelors degree from Oswego Normal School in 1951, and obtained his Masters degree from SUNY Geneseo. Al's main career was in working with people with developmental disabilities.  He was a teacher and transitioned into the Director of Education with Craig Colony, later Craig Developmental Center.  He served on many school boards, including as a member and President of the Dansville School Board, board member and President of the NYS School Boards Association, the Rural School Boards Association of NYS, and the Genesee Valley BOCES Board. He was very active in many clubs and organizations. He was a member and past president of the Dansville Historical Society, a member of the Loyal Order Of Moose, and a charter member of the Toy Train Collectors Society. He was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, serving on the church council as member and President, and he took care of the grounds for over 40 years. He once testified in front of the US Supreme Court to not allow public funding to be used for a private school.  Al was a terrific advocate for the community and the state. 

Surviving in addition to his loving wife Janice, are their children, Marilyn (Henry) Robin, Doug (Cindy) Hawk, grandchildren, Andrew (Megan) Hawk, Sarah (Chris) Walczyk, Trinity Robin, Heather Robin, and Penny (Adam) Leven, 6 great-grandchildren, a brother, Gordon (Frances) Hawk, Sister-in-Law Judith Hawk.

Friends may call Thursday October 18, 2018 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at the Hindle Funeral Home Inc. 271 Main St. Dansville, NY 1443. A funeral service will be held Friday October 19, 2018 11:00am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dansville. Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery Dansville.
