Alan was born on July 12, 1928, in Springville, NY and lived there through high school receiving his diploma in 1946. Alan continued his education at the University of Buffalo, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology in 1950. Alan joined the U.S. Army after college and was honorably discharged after three years of service at the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After his military service, Alan embarked on his professional career developing, managing and consulting in the museum and natural sciences. His first position was as a Supervisor at the Newark (Newark, NJ) Museum. He then accepted the newly created Director position of the Mid-Fairfield (Westport, CT) Youth Museum, then as the Director for the Rochester Museum and Science Center (Rochester, NY), and finally as the Director of Operations for the Natural Science for Youth Foundation (New Canaan, Ct). After moving to Dansville in 1974, Alan became a self-employed consultant as well as actively managing a tree farm on family owned property in Springwater NY. In his spare time Alan had many hobbies including photography, woodworking and genealogy. Alan is survived by his wife of 61 years Marilyn Mahl, children, Jennifer Mahl, Jonathan Mahl of Dansville, and Timothy Mahl and wife Tracy Mahl of Wake Forest NC, grandchildren, Tara Shaffer, Samuel Mahl, Daniel Mahl, and Zachary Mahl, as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday September 27, at 12:00 noon at the Dansville United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Springville Rural Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., Dansville. Online remembrances may be left at HindleFuneralHome.com.
