Obituary of Melvin C. Gridley

Sparta- Melvin C. Gridley age 79, passed away early Saturday evening February 1, 2014, at Noyes memorial Hospital in Dansville. He was born in Dansville on February 14, 1934, a son of the late Raymond and Lena (Traxler) Gridley. On July 16, 1955, he was married to Patricia (Karns) Gridley, who predeceased him on June 27, 1995. Mel was the shop foreman at Shay’s Service Inc., in Dansville for many years. He was a 50 year member of the Phoenix Lodge #115 of the F & AM, the Kate J. Jackson Court of the Amaranth, the Sparta Center Fire Department and the Sparta Fly By’s Model Airplane Club. In his free time he enjoyed tinkering on old tractors, telling his grandchildren and friends stories from the past, hunting, and fishing. Mel is survived by his children, Debra (Donald) Halpenny of Sparta, Michael (Jeanne) Gridley of Sparta, Dorean (Richard) Snyder of FL, and Darla (Richard) Paul of Sparta; grandchildren, Matthew and Douglas Gridley, Amanda (Trevor) Martin and Joshua (Rachel) Halpenny, Sarah and Bryan Paul, Elizabeth (Mathew) Coop and Derrick Snyder, great grandchildren; Connor and Carter Coop, Julian, Gordon, Samantha, Peter, and William Martin, Ty and Payton Halpenny. A sister Kay (Donald) Young, a sister in law, Beverly Bartles, several nieces and nephews Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc. 271 Main St. in Dansville, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday with the Rev.
