Dansville- Claribel Sutton Easton 99, a lifelong resident of Sparta and Dansville passed away Tuesday evening, March 6, 2012, at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville following a brief illness. Born in the Town of Sparta on January 28, 1913, she was the third of the late Edward and Nellie Moose Sutton's four daughters. On August 19, 1939, she married Ellsworth B. Easton who predeceased her on October 30, 1967. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by her sisters, Marie, Dorothy and Betty. She was also predeceased by two sons, William Herbert Easton who died shortly after birth in 1940, and her special son, William Ellsworth Easton whom she lovingly cared for at home until he passed away in 1981 at the age of 33. Clare was a graduate of Dansville High School where she was valedictorian of the class of 1929. In 1932 she graduated from the Geneseo Normal School. She later returned to study at SUNY Geneseo and received her bachelor's degree in 1962. Her teaching career spanned several decades and several formats. In the early 1930's she taught in one-room schoolhouses in two different districts in Sparta. From 1936 to 1939 she taught second and third grades in the Holland School District in Holland, New York. While there she and other young teachers roomed and boarded with local families and formed friendships that lasted throughout their lives. For six years in the 1950's Mrs. Easton was a third grade teacher at the Dansville Elementary School. In the 1960's and 1970's she home tutored elementary students who were unable to attend school because of illness, injury or disabilities. She later tutored junior high school students in reading under the Title 1 Program. Clare was a life-long active member of the Sparta Center United Methodist Church, a member and officer of the United Methodist Women and a former member of the Dansville Women's Civic Club. She was a volunteer for many service organizations such and FISH, Meals on Wheels and the Noyes Hospital Gift Shop. She was one of the original members of Livingston County Compassionate Care and devoted many hours to that cause. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, crocheting and reading, but she was most passionate about writing poetry. She often wrote poems and/or parodies for special occasions such as teachers' retirements and going-away parties for favorite ministers and other friends. Surviving is a son Robert J. (Pamela) Easton of Jaffrey, NH, a daughter, Anne M. Easton of Attica, NY; two granddaughters, Deborah (Chris) Follomon of New Ipswich, NH and Sarah (Craig) Richard of Fitchburg, MA; one grandson, Aaron (Carley) Easton of Mansfield, MA; seven great-grandchildren, Maddison Duffy, Saffron Duffy, Etienne Follomon all of New Ipswich, NH, Haegan Easton, Evelyn Easton, Harrison Easton all of Mansfield, MA and Dax Richard of Fitchburg, MA; one cousin, Doris Haywood of Dansville; several generations of beloved nieces and nephews, and many friends. Friends may call Friday, March 9, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc. 271 Main St. Dansville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday March 10, 2012 at Sparta Center United Methodist Church. Online remembrances may be left at HindleFuneralHome.com.
