Dansville- Harry M. Jones 91, formerly of Gibson St., in Dansville passed away late Sunday afternoon April 3, 2011 at the McAuley Manor Nursing Home in Hornell. He was born in Hornell on December 8, 1919, a son of the late William and Helen (Nephew) Jones. On January 31, 1942, he was married to Katherine R. (Kelly) Jones, who predeceased him on August 9, 2008. Harry was a WW II veteran. He was a Lieutenant in the Army and taught the soldiers Jiu Jitsu. Harry was a member, and the oldest living past commander of the Arthur Cunningham Post # 440 in the American Legion in Hornell. He was also a past commander of the Steuben County American Legion. For many years he was the Interlocutor for the Hornell area minstrel show. He was a member of the Cohocton Assembly of God Church where was the Treasurer, Sunday School teacher and held many positions over the years. In his early years he worked for the Accounting Bureau in Hornell, after which he was a meat cutter at the A & P in Hornell and Bath N Y. He then cut meat at the I G A Store in Nunda and East Avon. He then owned the I G A Store in Dansville for many years until it was lost by fire. He moved to Virginia where he worked for Aids Hardware. He and Kate moved back to Dansville where he was a foreman at Foster Wheeler for a short while. He then worked for Ideal Lumber in Dansville and Geneseo. He worked for Ebert's Energy Center and Hardware for a few years and in the last few years he worked for Rogers n Tenbrook Hardware. He worked until the age of 89 everyday of his life-he was a Hard Working Man- NO Breaks for him! He taught many young people proper work ethics by being the EXAMPLE. In early years, he was lovingly known as WHIP! He LOVED people and they Loved HIM! He took GREAT care of his wife Kate and was a loving and wonderful husband and father. He is survived by three daughters, Sondra Lee (Jack) Mc Tarnaghan of VA, Sharon Ann (Don) Murphy of Dansville and Helen Marie (Raymond) Bertalon of Ossian, six grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. There will be no prior calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the Cohocton Assembly of God Church on Saturday July 23, at 10:00am. Arrangements are by the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., Dansville.
