Obituary of J. Peter Hillier

Dansville- J. Peter Hillier age 78, of Leonard St., in Dansville passed away late Monday afternoon December 13, 2010, at the Vincent House in Wayland. He was born in Dansville, on April 27, 1932, a son of the late Arthur and Katherine (Zimmer) Hillier. He was also predeceased by his siblings, William and Arthur Hillier, Elizabeth Romans, Dorothy Burgio and Katherine Hillier. Pete attended St. Mary's School and DCHS and went onto receive a Bachelors degree at SUNY Brockport in 1955, and a Masters degree at Alfred University in 1967. He was an avid lover of sports, and enjoyed playing football, basketball, and baseball. This led to a career path in physical education. Pete was a Physical Education teacher and coach in Victor, Honeoye and Dansville Central Schools. In 1980 he joined the Livingston County Sheriff's Department earning the rank of Corporal. He retired after 11 years of service. He was a longtime active member of the Dansville Lions Club, where he served as president and performed in many Minstrel shows. He had such a beautiful voice! Pete was a member of the Union Hose Company of the Dansville Volunteer Fire Dept for 50 years. He is a US Army veteran and member of the American Legion. He was a man of faith, and had a wit and unpredictable humor that always made people laugh. He held family and friends close to his heart. He loved local and civil war history, and adored most genres of music especially Big Band and Jazz. We will cherish his stories of growing up in Dansville, the 7th of 7, always outside and active. His two children were the pride and joy of his life. He is survived by a daughter, Suzie Hillier of Conesus, a son, Peter J. Hillier of Falls Church, VA. Twin sisters, Jean Bovee and Dolly (Clay) Caves both of Dansville, many nieces nephews and friends. Friends may call Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., in Dansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00am in St. Mary's Church in Dansville. Interment will be Holy Cross Cemetery, Dansville.
