Obituary of William F. VanWinkle

He was born in Hornell, NY on November 21, 1921, the eldest son of the late Francis and Olive (McCollum) Van Winkle. He was also predeceased by his brother Daniel, a sister and brother in-law Audrita and Robert Van Norman. He was a decorated WW II US Army veteran serving with the 9th Army, 8th Armored Division in the European Theater, including Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day. He had also served Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. After being employed for over 44 years at Foster Wheeler Energy Corp. of Dansville as a maintenance mechanic, he retired in 1983. He was a member of the twenty five year club and the IAM Local # 1665 at Foster Wheeler. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.He is survived by two daughters, Joan (Douglas) McCune and Deborah (Charles Purvee) Worden both of Rochester; two granddaughters, Amy (Matthew) McDonald and Sandra Worden, a step-grandson, Nicholas Purvee, a great-grandson, Cameron McDonald and twin great-grandchildren Blake and Natalie McDonald, his youngest brother Donald (Pat) Van Winkle of Arkport and a sister in-law, Virginia Van Winkle of Dansville, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Friends may call Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., Dansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Church in Dansville. Interment will be in Wood Cemetery, Ossian. Contributions may be made to the Dansville Fire Dept. PO Box 406, Dansville, NY 14437. Online remembrances may be left at HindleFuneralHome.com.
