Sparta- Gary A. Phelix age 82 passed away Friday afternoon August 28, 2026, at Highland Hospital in Rochester.

He was born in Potsdam, NY on April 24, 1944, the son of the late Franklin George and Ada Jennie (Adams) Phelix. He was also predeceased by a sister Donna Stahl and a nephew Gary Stahl. On April 7, 1973, he married Mary Smalt Phelix who survives.

Gary was a Vietnam Veteran, worked for Foster Wheeler and retired from Hanson Aggregate. Gary was known for his passion of older farm equipment that he would find in a random hedgerow or Craigslist, then wheel and deal with the owner to bring it home to fix up and plan to sell it. He especially enjoyed his everyday side by side rides with his special 4 paw copilot Dakota. While working the land with his excavating equipment making the "home on the hill" a respite for all of the family to enjoy over the past 50 years and for many years to come. He was a classic car enthusiast traveling annually to visit his extended family that still reside in the North Country. He was a Communicant of the Holy Family Catholic Community at St. Mary's Church in Dansville.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty-three years Mary are their children, Deborah Cannon, Daniel Drabin, Susan Barker and Karen (Darin) Smith, cousins, brother in laws, sister in laws, many nieces & nephews, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren. Along with many dear friends.

Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 pm at the Hindle Funeral Home Inc. 271 Main Street Dansville, NY 14437. A memorial Mass of Catholic Burial will be Celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Church in Dansville. Interment will be in Kiehle Cemetery in Sparta.
