William Joseph "Bill" Gross Jr. Obituary
Nunda/Dansville William J. Gross Jr. age 96 passed away early Thursday morning July 2, 2026, at the Livingston County CNR in Mt. Morris where he had been a resident for nearly a year.
Bill was born in Dansville on June 14, 1930, son of the late William and Josephine (Englert) Gross Sr. He was a graduate of Dansville High School Class of 1949. He began his employment at the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (better known as the A&P grocery store) during high school. After school he enlisted in the Navy. Bill was a US Navy veteran serving during the Korean War from 1950-1954. After the Navy he returned to the A&P where he eventually became produce manager and worked for 29 years. On January 31, 1959, at St. Mary's Church in Dansville he was married to Evelyn Houghtaling Gross who predeceased him on October 31, 2019. He was also predeceased by his sister Betty (Howard) Buchanan and brothers in-law John Kenney and Howard Buchanan. Bill and Evelyn had one daughter Jennifer Gross who survives. He is also survived by his sister Beverly Kenney of Geneseo and several nieces and nephews.
After his time with the A&P Bill worked for 10 years as an activity's aide at the Livingston County Campus in Mt. Morris. Bill was a sixty-seven-year member of the Daniel Goho Post #87 of the American Legion and a former member of the Loyal Order of The Moose #1130 in Dansville. In his youth Bill enjoyed playing baseball and basketball and hunting and fishing. He always tended to multiple gardens; he loved anything to do with science and technology and was a lifelong Bills fan (Go Bills!). But his ultimate passion was photography. His specialties were scenic photographs and portraits. Many family members and friends can attribute wedding photos and family portraits to Bill's skills. He also won first prize at the Nunda Fun Days photo contest for his "Bee in the Iris" which he was quite proud of. Bill also had a large ever growing vintage camera and antiques collection that he cherished.
