Groveland- Mary Catherine (Hird) Cooper age 102, passed away peacefully Saturday morning July 12, 2025, at the Highland Park Nursing Home in Wellsville.

She was born in the Town of Wheatfield NY on January 31, 1923, a daughter of the late Frederick and Agnes (Hill) Hird. On May 7, 1949, she married Fred Cooper, who predeceased her in 2014. She was also predeceased by a son Tom Cooper and her siblings, Fred and Jack Hird.

Mary grew up along the Niagara River and would often tell stories of the many adventures of swimming and boating on the mighty river. Mary met the man of her life while he was still in his Naval uniform after WWII, they married in 1949 in North Tonowanda and proceeded to build a home and have three children. In 1984, they sold the home in North Tonawanda and moved to Groveland and built a new home where she became a master gardener. She was a accomplished knitter, and creator of many cross-stitch samplers and quilts. She loved to travel with Fred to England and visit her daughter in her former homes in Alaska and Montana. After Fred passed in 2014, she moved to assisted living in Wellsville to be near her daughter Judith. After a fall in early 2025, she moved to Highland Park Nursing Home. She was formerly employed as a bank teller for Marine Midland Bank in North Tonawanda.

She is survived by her daughters Judith (David Fanton) Cooper of Wellsville, Nancy (Tom) Wilson of Geneseo, grandchildren, Elizabeth (Matt Patteson) Wilson, Emily Wilson and Ramona Kingsley (Cooper) great-grandson, Wyatt Wilson, a sister Ruth Jones and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Thursday July 17 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc. 271 Main St., in Dansville. She will be laid to rest by her dear friends in Jesus at a funeral service at the completion of calling hours. Interment will be next to Fred in Union Cemetery in Scottsburg.
