Obituary of Dora Coates

Geneseo- Dora M. Coates age 91, passed away Monday night September 19, 2016 at the Jewish Home in Rochester. She was born in Dansville, NY on February 25, 1925, a daughter of the late Walter J. and Mae (Somerville) McTarnaghan. On July 18, 1950, she married William J. Coates who predeceased her in 1998. She was also predeceased by her brother, Donald McTarnaghan, brother-in-law Peter Coates, sister-in-law Lucille Sharrow, Lucille's husband Phil Sharrow and daughter-in-law Kandice Coates. Dora was a graduate of Dansville High School class of 1941; she then attended Geneseo Teachers College, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree. Dora taught in several Rochester area schools before she began to raise her family. She later returned to teaching and became an 8th grade school teacher at Dansville Junior High School. After her husband, William passed away, Dora moved to the Lakeville Estates. While at the estates Dora enjoyed playing card games such as bridge, and developed lifelong friendships. Mother of Edward (Kathleen) Coates of Norwich, Deborah Coates of Ames, IA, Martin (Bonita) Coates of Painted Post, Susan (Steven) Kell of Clifton Springs and Matthew (Sharon) Coates of Henrietta. Sister-in-law of Lois McTarnaghan of Jamesville and Dr. Helen (Norman) Smith of Melbourne, Australia. Grandmother to Lindsey (Josh) Courage, Andrew Coates, Patrick (Kaitlin) Coates, Nathan (Natalia) Coates, Jessica Coates, Dakota (Tiffany) Rudolph, Bethany Rudolph, Michael Kell, David (Meghan Kelley) Kell, Thomas Coates, Justin Coates. In addition to her immediate family, Dora will be dearly missed by her nieces, nephews, cousins, fellow retired teachers from Dansville Central, bridge partners and opponents, neighbors at Lakeville Estates and Manasota Beach Gardens, Florida, fellow parishioners at St. Michael’s and St. Peter’s Episcopal Churches, and friends everywhere. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday September 24, at 11:00am at Saint Michael’s Church, 23 Main St. Geneseo, NY 14454. Arrangements made by the Hindle Funeral Home Inc.
