Dansville- Donald M. Boyd age 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon February 1, 2015, at home with his loving daughter at this side. Don was born in Groveland on March 4, 1923, the oldest son of the late William J. and Gladys (Morris) Boyd. On October 1, 1949, he was married Elizabeth J. Smith, who predeceased him on April 21, 2013. He was also predeceased by a sister, Mary E. (Betty) Sauerbier, and brothers Clyde A. William J. and Gerald T. Boyd. Don served his country during World War II, enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was assigned to the Eighth Air Force 388th Bomb Group. He served as a B-17 Tail Gunner for three missions. He was a POW for 23 months. Don was a self-employed shoe retailer operating Boyd’s Shoe Store Dansville for 31 years, he was also a part-time School Bus driver for the Dansville Central School District for 38 years. He was an avid golfer, recording two holes- in-one at his home course Brae Burn. Don was a sports enthusiast, he lettered in football, basketball and baseball in High School. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, and card games. He was honored to be inducted into the Dansville High School Athletic Wall of Fame in 2005. He is survived by his children, Dr. Ronald J. (Mary Kate) Boyd, Mary Lynn (Gregory) Kuebler, and Linda J. Boyd, his sisters, Sarah Jean Mc Kay and Joyce A. Mothorpe, sister’s in law Helen V.(Dolly) Boyd and Marilyn Boyd, four grandchildren; Meghan E. (Thomas) Kelly, Dr. Colleen P. Boyd, Kathryn L. (Nicholas) Drogo and Gregory Boyd Kuebler. Friends may Thursday from 4 to 7pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc. 271 Main St, Dansville, where services will be held on Friday at 11:00am. Interment with full military honors will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery Dansville. Don’s was a life well lived; He was a shining example of why Tom Brokaw labeled them, “The Greatest Generation.” In lieu of flowers please make memorials to the Livingston County Hospice, Murray Hill Drive, Mt. Morris, NY 14510.
