Donald R. “Red” Stewart age 77 passed away unexpectedly Thursday afternoon April 17, 2014, from injuries sustained in a farm accident. He was born in Dansville on November 3, 1936, a son of the late John E. and Emma Mosher Stewart. On April 21, 1962, Red was married to the former Shirley Young Stewart who survives. Red was an active member, Past President and former Secretary of the James H. Jackson Hose Company of the Dansville Fire Department. He was instrumental in the organization and was the Chairman of the Annual Jackson Hose Oktoberfest Celebration on Labor Day Weekends in Dansville for many years. He was a member of the Frank J. Casbolt # 6780 VFW Post and the Loyal Order of the Moose # 1130 both of Dansville. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing Euchre, reading and rooting for the NY Yankees. Red and his son operated a firewood business and farm at the top of Stony Brook Hill for many years. Red was a US Army veteran serving from 1955 to 1958 including time spent on the Panama Canal. He was a pressman and night supervisor at the former Dansville Press. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, three children; Sheila (Randy) Conrad, Donald (Cherish Stone) Stewart both of Dansville and Joy (Patrick) Buzzell of NH, grandchildren, Kiersten and Hayley Conrad, Griffin and Seth Buzzell; sister, Beverly Mattice of Dansville, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc. 271 Main St., Dansville. Services for Red will be held privately.
