Obituary of Robert J. Goodwin

Bob was born in Olean, on September 2, 1924, a son of the late Arthur J. and Lillian K. (Brady) Goodwin. On September 10, 1949, he was married to Doris Birkenhead Goodwin, who predeceased him 1990. He was a longtime resident of the Wayland-Dansville area. Bob graduated from Kingston (PA) High School in 1943. He served his country in US Army during WW II (the big war) from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946, as a corporal. He served as an anti-aircraft artillery operator, fire control instrument operator, and range section NCO and guard patrolman. He earned the good conduct medal, American theater service medal, the WWII victory medal and the EAME theater medal with three bronze stars. He was a member for over fifty consecutive years of the Daniel Goho Post # 87 of the American Legion, and a member of the Frank J. Casbolt # 6780 of the VFW both of Dansville. He worked as a systems analyst for Foster Wheeler Energy Corp. of Dansville from 1951 until his retirement in 1986. Bob's hobbies included golf, and in 2008 hit his first "Hole in One" at Brae Burn in Dansville. He was a member of musical groups, The Metronomes, The Boilermakers, and the Dansville Community Chorus. He also sang in the chorus in several past Dansville Lions Club Minstrel Shows. He enjoyed calligraphy and other types of art work, poetry, limericks, history and constant learning of new things. Bob is survived by his longtime companion Betty Miles of Wayland, his children, Colleen (Ted) Vogel and Kevin (Linda) Goodwin, both of Dansville. Four grandchildren, Bradley Kenney of Carver, MN, Matt Vogel of Tacoma, WA, Sean Goodwin of Rochester and Mariah Goodwin of BelAir, MD. A great-granddaughter Holly Kenney. A sister Rosemary Dempsey of Dansville, a brother Jack Goodwin of Marcellus, NY, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call Sunday from 12:00 noon to 2:30pm at the Hindle Funeral Home Inc., 271 Main St. Dansville, where an American Legion Service will be held at the completion of calling hours. Full military honors will be performed at the funeral home. Interment at the convenience of the family will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dansville.
